Sunshine Children
Í október árið 1915 hóf íslenska dagblaðið Lögberg í Winnipeg útgáfu á sérblaðinu Sólskin sem ætlað var börnum íslenskra innflytjenda í Vesturheimi. Börnin fóru ekki varhluta af útgáfunni og ekki leið á löngu bar til þau mynduðu með sér leshring. Um það vitna fjölmörg bréf sem dagblaðið birti í nafni Sólskinsbarna. Bréfin eru flest skrifuð á íslensku og veita djúpstæða innsýn í daglegt líf og kringumstæður íslenskra innflytjenda Norõur Ameríku á
fyrstu áratugum tuttugustu alda. Börnin skrifa einnig um samfélagsleg og menningarpólitísk málefni, meðal annars áhrif fyrri heimsstyrjaldar á líf fólks og albjóðlega baráttu fyrir kvenfrelsi. Staða íslenskunnar í úthafi enskunnar er þeim einnig hugleikin og í því efni fengu þau meðal annars hvatningu frá börnum á gamla landinu en Halldór Laxness, ungur að árum, birti bréf í Sólskini. Ef frá er talin mikilvæg grein Dagnýjar Kristjánsdóttur í Ritinu um barnablöðin í Vesturheimi, hafa bréf Sólskinsbarna legið meira og minna óbætt hjá garði. Bókin um Sólskinsbörnin byggir á rækilegri rannsókn Christophers Crocker á þessari einstöku heimild og varpar ljósi á lífsreynslu og kringumstæður barna íslenskra vesturfara. Birna Bjarnadóttir ritar formála og er ritstjóri bókarinnar. Sjóður Páls Guðmundssonar fr Rjúpnafelli í vörslu HÍ styrkti útgáfuna.
Christopher W. E. Crocker er fræðimaður á sviði íslenskra bókmennta og hefur birt rannsóknir sínar í tímaritum og greinasöfnum. The children’s newspaper Sólskin (Eng. Sunshine) first appeared as a part of the North American-Icelandic newspaper Lögberg in October 1915. The paper’s target audience, the so-called Sólskinsbörn (Eng. Sunshine children), consisted of children of Icelandic descent living in North America. Sólskin functioned as a source of entertainment, education, and news, but also aspired to preserve community bonds, a sense of Icelandic cultural identity, and Icelandic language proficiency among the North American-Icelandic community’s youngest generation. To this end, in addition to its adult-authored content, the paper provided a venue for children to express themselves by printing numerous letters to the editor. Through their letters, which are the focus of this book, the Sunshine children explored, fashioned, and performed different aspects of their lives and their shared North American-Icelandic cultural identity. Collectively, the letters of the Sunshine children offer vital insight toward the question of what it meant to be a part of the North American-Icelandic community in the early part of the twentieth century. The book is edited by Birna Bjarnadóttir, who also writes the Foreword.
Christopher Crocker is a scholar of medieval and modern Icelandic literature whose research has appeared in numerous journals and edited collections. He is co-editor of Cultural Legacies of Old Norse Literature (Boydell & Brewer, 2022) and author of The Sunshine Children (Hin kindin, 2023). He also works as a translator and has published translations or co-translations of works by Guttormur J. Guttormsson, Jón Thoroddsen, Theodóra Thoroddsen, and a large collection of letters published in the North American-Icelandic children's newspaper Sólskin.
